Watch Spoon’s Slick ‘Hot Thoughts’ Performance on ‘Ellen’
Spoon performed a seething rendition of “Hot Thoughts,” the disco-tinged title track from their latest album, on Ellen Tuesday.
While the daytime talkshow setting may have seemed like a strange fit for the Austin outfit, the group sauntered comfortably through “Hot Thoughts,” with its mix of dance floor percussion and jagged guitar lines. Singer-guitarist Britt Daniel delivered smoldering vocals punctuated with periodic yelps and a fiery growl on the final chorus.
Spoon will embark on a lengthy North American tour this summer in support of Hot Thoughts. The trek begins April 28th in Oxford, Mississippi and wraps September 15th in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
Spoon released Hot Thoughts in March, marking their ninth LP and first since 2014’s They Want My Soul. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Daniel spoke about the influence David Bowie and Prince had on Hot Thoughts. Of the latter he said, “I learned a lot from Prince’s songwriting tricks. Prince knew that to put an exclamation point at the end of a song, it’d be good to scream at the last chorus. Even if you sang the chorus a certain way every time before then, if you get to the third one, you better be screaming.”
