Hear No Doubt-AFI Supergroup Dreamcar’s Frenetic New Song ‘Born to Lie’
No Doubt–AFI supergroup Dreamcar released “Born to Lie,” a New Wave-style sing-along from their upcoming, self-titled debut LP.
Singer Davey Havok emotes about a would-be romance ruined by practicality (I’ve grown too tired to lie/ and you’re born so sick of truth”) over Tony Kanal’s grumbling bass, Adrian Young’s drums and Tom Dumont’s phaser-driven guitars. Dreamcar formed in 2014 but didn’t formally announce the project until last year. In March, the quartet detailed their 12-track debut album and released lead single “Kill for Candy.”
In a recent Rolling Stone interview, Kanal discussed the project’s prominent Eighties vibe, which was inspired by the musicians’ teenage years. “That’s the kind of music that we all grew up on,” he said. “When you’re in those really formative years, from, like, 13 to 19, what you listen to is so influential, and I think that’s just part of our being now. It was never like, ‘Oh, let’s try to do this!’ It’s just the stuff that makes you feel comfortable.”
Dreamcar is out May 12th. The band kicked off a North American tour this week, and their next date is Sunday, April 9th in San Francisco.
