Watch Stephen Colbert on Kendall Jenner’s ‘Attractive Lives Matter’ Pepsi Ad
Stephen Colbert joined prominent activists and organizers in mocking Pepsi’s new advertisement on Wednesday. The commercial (which Pepsi has since pulled) stars Kendall Jenner as a member of a happy, youthful, racially mixed protest. The clip ends after Jenner gives a can of soda to a white police officer and appears to magically solve all the problems related to racially motivated police violence.
“We have a deeply divided nation,” Colbert said solemnly on The Late Show. “But today it seems like everyone has come together to join the protest against the new protest ad from Pepsi.”
Colbert showed a series of segments from the Pepsi commercial, pointing out the tone-deaf qualities of each one. “So far, we don’t know what has caused all of America’s hot extras to take to the streets,” he quipped after footage of Jenner’s protest flashed across the screen. “But I’m guessing it’s a protest for Attractive Lives Matter.”
He also mocked the protesters’ bland signs, which included messages like “join the conversation.” “They might as well be holding signs that say, we are all the core demographic,” Colbert joked.
The Late Show-host had extra fun with the clip’s final shot, which urges Pepsi drinkers to “live for now.” “Live for now especially if you’re Pepsi’s marketing department,” he said. “I don’t think you guys are gonna be there for long.”
Pepsi announced yesterday that it was pulling the new ad from circulation. “Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding,” the company said in a statement, according to The New York Times. “Clearly, we missed the mark and apologize. We did not intend to make light of any serious issue. We are pulling the content and halting any further rollout.”
