Hear Selena Gomez’s Tender Cover of Yaz’s ‘Only You’
Selena Gomez tackled Yaz’s 1982 synth-pop hit “Only You” for the New Wave-heavy 13 Reasons Why soundtrack. Gomez executive produced the Netflix series, which premieres on March 31st.
Gomez stripped down the more dance-friendly original version by Yaz, a duo consisting of Depeche Mode’s Vince Clarke on keyboards and Alison Moyet on vocals. Gomez’s version is more ambient and atmospheric, turning it into an airy, aching ballad.
The soundtrack for 13 Reasons Why also contains songs by the Cure and Joy Division as well as an acoustic take on Gomez’s Revival track “Kill Em With Kindness.” Gomez and her mother co-executive produced the series, which is based off a 2007 YA novel of the same name. The 13-episode show will tell the aftermath of a suicide by the show’s teenage protagonist Hannah. The show revolves around individualized cassette tapes she recorded for 13 different classmates explaining why she took her life and how they were partly responsible.
