See Bill Maher Tease Paul Ryan, GOP Over Trumpcare Failure
Bill Maher opened Friday’s Real Time by mocking Donald Trump, Paul Ryan and Republicans for their inability to generate enough support to pass the American Health Care Act.
“Isn’t this amazing? For seven years, this is all Republicans lived to do, was to repeal and replace Obamacare,” Maher said. “Oh, this looks bad for Trump. You know how Putin feels about failure.”
Republican faction the Freedom Caucus – or “the artist formerly known as the Tea Party,” Maher said – were responsible for Trumpcare not obtaining enough votes, as they worried that even though Ryan made dramatic subtractions from his health care bill, the AHCA still had “the skeleton” of Obamacare.
“Paul Ryan wrote a health care bill that somehow covered fewer people than just repealing Obamacare, and replaced it with nothing, and it still wasn’t good enough for the Freedom Caucus,” Maher said. “It’s like if you wrote a highway bill that made all the bridges fall down, and they said, ‘Yeah, but that only kills drivers, what about people at home?'”
Ryan and the Freedom Caucus continued to tinker with AHCA throughout the week to make it “more attractive to psychopaths.”
“In the last version they had cut hospitalization, doctors visits, maternity, mental health, lab tests, prescriptions, emergency room visits,” Maher said of the Republicans’ final attempt to get AHCA approval. “Their version of health care was, ‘If you like your doctor, go fuck yourself.'”
Ultimately, AHCA died without a vote.
