Hear Mike Patton Sing Spastic New Dead Cross Rager
It’s been a few months since Dead Cross, the hardcore-metal crossover group that features former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo, announced that they’d drafted Faith No More frontman Mike Patton as their new singer. Now the group has released “Shillelagh,” a spasmodic, punky thrasher that shows off Patton’s ability to use operatic vocals to encase goofy lyrics like, “I took a pee and it came out red/ I took a dump and it came out dead,” as MetalSucks reported.
The song will reportedly appear on the group’s debut album, set to come out on Patton’s Ipecac label. Ross Robinson (Korn, Deftones) produced the album.
Last year, Lombardo told Rolling Stone why he liked playing in Dead Cross, a group that also features members of the Locust and Retox. “This band provokes my aggression,” he said. “We, Ross included, all have fearless musical mindsets. Our collective résumés definitely reflect that. I believe that when you have musicians in a room that share that particular attribute, it takes you to another level in every way. With this band, I play harder, I play faster, and I play with the fury that this music demands. Each member brings a great deal of intensity and skill to the table. It’s invigorating to work with them.”
