‘Grateful Dead Movie’ to Return to Theaters for 40th Anniversary
An upcoming Grateful Dead “meet-up,” where Deadheads nationwide congregate at the cinema for one night only, will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the band’s 1977 concert film The Grateful Dead Movie.
The Fathom Events screening will circle back to the film featured in its 2011 event. The Grateful Dead Movie 40th Anniversary celebration, scheduled for April 20th at 7 p.m. local time, centers around the Dead’s historic “farewell” run at San Francisco’s Winterland in October 1974.
As a bonus, the 40th anniversary screening will also feature a never-before-seen mini-documentary about the Dead’s legendary May 8th, 1977 concert at Cornell University featuring new interviews with fans who attended the show. That Cornell gig, one of the Dead’s most storied concerts, will also be the focus of an upcoming 11-disc box set titled Get Shown the Light, which focuses on the May 1977 leg of the jam band’s Terrapin Station tour.
An exclusive excerpt from the upcoming authorized Dead documentary Long Strange Trip will also screen during the Meet-Up. That six-part film debuted earlier this year at Sundance ahead of its May arrival on Amazon.
“Grateful Dead fans across the country share a special connection with each other and with their favorite band,” Fathom Events CEO John Rubey said in a statement. “Gathering these dedicated fans together to experience exciting content from their favorite artists is at the core of what we do, and this event is a great example of that.”
Tickets for the Grateful Dead Movie 40th Anniversary celebration go on sale Friday through the Fathom Events site.
Martin Scorsese’s long-in-the-works official Grateful Dead documentary, ‘Long Strange Trip,’ will head to Amazon Prime Video in May.
