Watch ‘Voice’ Contestant Sheena Brook’s Confident Sugarland Cover
Teenage prodigies. Heartbreaking stories. Coach drama. As any fan of The Voice knows by now, singing itself can sometimes feel like an afterthought. Not so with the angelic voice of contestant Sheena Brook, who commanded attention from the first note of her version of Sugarland’s “Baby Girl.”
“I sing a lot of different genres. But I just love country music. I love telling a simple story. This song is about the struggle of a musician, and I’m ready to prove I can do more than a beach bar,” says the 33-year-old, Fort Myers Beach, Florida resident before taking the stage. Looking completely in her element, Brook’s vocals transitioned effortlessly between breathy verses and rich, throaty choruses. “And there are fancy cars and diamond rings, and you know that they don’t mean a thing,” she croons, with Shania Twain-like flair.
Though coach Blake Shelton is animatedly singing along during her audition, his team is full, clearly to his disappointment. Instead, Brook goes to Coach Adam Levine’s team, who praises, “You have so many things working for you. You have the fact that you’re A. Incredible, B. I know Blake’s hands were literally tied. There’s nothing that makes me happier than the destruction of Blake Shelton.” And though Brook may be reminiscent of Lilith Fair-era favorites – Sarah McLachlan comes to mind – it should be interesting to see what musical direction Levine gives her.
Last night’s show also witnessed Shelton filling out his team with a final member, 17-year-old Dawson Coyle, who performed Needtobreathe’s “Happiness.”
This episode concluded season 12’s blind auditions. The Voice returns next Monday, March 20th, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC with special guest Luke Bryan, Céline Dion, DJ Khaled, and John Legend, who will serve as mentors during the battle rounds.
