Hear Canadian Troubadour Colter Wall’s New Dave Cobb Produced Song
Colter Wall heads to the slammer in “Thirteen Silver Dollars,” the kinetic kickoff track from his upcoming debut.
Recorded in Nashville with producer Dave Cobb, the song finds the Canadian crooner waking up on a snowbank, drunk, to the unwelcome sight of an approaching policeman. It’s a short song – an isolated detail from a larger story that’s never finished, encouraging listeners to whip up their own endings – but Wall makes the most of his time, filling the track with the deep rumble of his world-weary baritone and the twang of his acoustic guitar.
Like the rest of his self-titled, 11-track debut, “Thirteen Silver Dollars” is partially autobiographical.
“It was inspired by a run-in I had with a local officer of the law in my hometown of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, sometimes called ‘Speedy Creek,'” he tells Rolling Stone Country. “We got to know each other a little more than either of us would have liked, I think.”
Although Wall is the only musician to appear on the song, he’s joined by former Waylon Jennings sideman Robby Turner on the rest of the record, as well as Cobb himself.
“Dave’s a remarkable producer,” he adds, “and equally impressive as a musician. Having both Dave the producer and Dave the player on this record felt like winning the lottery. I feel that way about everyone who played on this record. Kind of surreal, really.”
