Remy Ma Explains Why She Went After Nicki Minaj on Diss Tracks
“I came appropriate for the services,” Remy Ma said with a straight face on Wendy Williams. The Terror Squad MC sat beside collaborator Fat Joe in a black veiled hat and dress ready for a funeral. After releasing two vicious diss tracks aimed at Nicki Minaj (“shETHER” and “Another One”), there was no question whose funeral Remy was dressed for. “My grandmother always told me to never speak ill of the dead,” she added.
The release of Fat Joe and Remy Ma’s new album Plata o Plomo was eclipsed by the latter’s timely resurrection of a decade-old feud with Nicki Minaj that began in 2007, before Minaj’s fame and Remy Ma’s six-year incarceration.
“It wasn’t that [Minaj] was targeted,” Remy Ma said of her over-six-minute song “shETHER.” “People don’t understand. I hear people like, ‘We’re waiting for [Nicki’s] response.’ [‘shETHER’] was a response. She started [the beef]. I feel like it’s weird because she’s been doing this to a lot of females from Lil’ Kim to Mariah [Carey] to Taylor [Swift] to [Miley Cyrus], and no one says anything.”
Remy Ma suggested the songs weren’t inspired by anything Minaj directly did to her, but by Minaj’s alleged condescending and calculating “behind-the-scenes” reputation.
“This person, just based on what I’m witnessing, is not a nice person,” Remy Ma said. “It was the behind-the-scenes things that you people will never know about … trying to keep me off of red carpets, trying to make sure awards don’t go to me or she’s not going to be in attendance, or trying to get people to make bad reports about my album sales, or just anything that I’m doing to make me look less and make her look better. I have a problem. When you’re trying to stop my bag, when you’re trying to stop me from taking care of my children, now, I have a problem with that.”
In addition to Plata o Plomo, Remy Ma said she is working on her solo album, Seven Winters, Six Summers. The title appears to allude to her jail time at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. “We can be friends,” said Remy Ma. “[But] I will be cataloging information … [If] nothing ever happens, I’ll never open the file cabinet. But if we do …”
Nicki Minaj and Remy Ma reignited a decade-long feud with scathing tracks and remarks in February.
