Hear Miguel, DJ Premier’s Smoldering New Song ‘2 Lovin U’
Miguel and DJ Premier unveiled the upbeat new song, “2 Lovin U,” the final version of a song first teased in 2014, Pitchfork reports.
The track finds Miguel delivering a smoldering vocal take over a classic boom bap drum beat and a guitar that splits the difference between brooding rock and grooving disco. DJ Premier, meanwhile, laces the track with some classic turntable work, scratching up samples of people saying “Damn!” in between Miguel’s hook, “I’d do it all again, I’m damned to loving you.”
In 2014, Miguel posted a video to Instagram featuring himself and Premier listening a rough version of “2 Lovin U,” which at the time was called “Damned.” In an interview with MTV, Miguel said that he loved the song, but ultimately kept it off his 2015 album, Wildheart, because it didn’t fit with the rest of the LP. “It’s never about one song,” he said. “Every piece of the puzzle supports the picture, so if one of the pieces doesn’t fit and doesn’t capture the emotion and sonic representation I’m hearing, unfortunately I just have to save it for something else.”
Premier added, “Miguel and I had deadlines and we never got around to finishing it. We both really believed in this version of the track and we both felt very strongly that it needed to come out and be released as a single.”
While Miguel hasn’t released an album since Wildheart, the singer shared a handful of new tracks last year including “Come Through and Chill,” the Black Lives Matter tribute “How Many” and “Cadillac,” a song for Netflix’s The Get Down. DJ Premier most recently produced “NYC,” the first song released from Faith Evans’ posthumous album with the Notorious B.I.G.
