See Gorillaz Debut ‘Humanz’ Songs at Secret London Gig
A day after Gorillaz outlined their new LP Humanz, Damon Albarn and his all-star troupe debuted the album in its entirety at a secret gig at London’s Printworks. Portions of the concert were live-streamed on the cartoon band’s Facebook.
“We’re gonna play our new album Humanz in its entirety. We’ve got pretty much everyone who’s on the record here,” Albarn told the crowd, adding that while the full cast of guests weren’t able to make the performance on such short notice, every artist featured on Humanz will appear at the Gorillaz‘ upcoming Demon Dayz Festival in June.
The concert, the band’s first in nearly seven years, started with opening track “Ascension” – featuring guest Vince Staples, who was not on hand but performed the track in a pre-taped video – and then rifled through the album’s 14 songs as well as its interludes.
Guests included Danny Brown, Noel Gallagher, Pusha T, Jean Michel Jarre, Kelala, Benjamin Clementine (“Hallelujah Money”), Anthony Hamilton, Savages’ Jehnny Beth and more.
In addition to the Humanz tracks and surprise guests, the Gorillaz gig also featured their debut album hit “Clint Eastwood,” co-starring Del the Funky Homosapian.
De La Soul, who performed earlier in the night for Humanz‘ “Momentz,” returned during the encore for the Demon Days single “Feel Good, Inc.” The concert concluded with the Demon Days suite “Don’t Get Lost in Heaven” and “Demon Days.”
Humanz is due out April 28th. On Thursday, Albarn and company premiered four tracks from the LP.
