Hear Old Dominion Shout Out to ‘Jack and Diane’ in Upbeat New Song
After teasing the track online, Old Dominion have released “No Such Thing as a Broken Heart,” the first single from their upcoming second album.
The uplifting new song considers how couples are able to keep love alive through life’s ups and downs, opening with a classic-rock allusion to John Mellencamp: “I wonder if Jack and Diane ever made it, after the drums and the guitars all faded.” Its breezy, summer-ready production complements the song’s optimistic lyrics, which positions love as the antidote to “all of this bullshit that goes down on TV,” among other obstacles. (In a clever bit of branding, the band pairs “No Such Thing as a Broken Heart” with a logo that equates heartbreak with the mythical Bigfoot.)
Old Dominion co-wrote the song with Jesse Frasure, with Shane McAnally handling production duties. Their still-to-be-announced album is the follow-up to their 2015 debut Meat and Candy. That record produced hits like “Song for Another Time” and “Break Up with Him.”
Old Dominion is nominated for Vocal Group of the Year at this year’s ACM Awards. In a post on the band’s Facebook page earlier this week, they announced that a number of upcoming shows would be canceled due to a sudden death in a band member’s family. Their next live appearance is set for March 16th in Iowa, with shows on Miranda Lambert’s Highway Vagabond Tour to follow.
