Watch Spoon’s Punchy New Video for ‘Can I Sit Next To You’
Spoon released a black-and-white video for new song “Can I Sit Next to You,” from their new album Hot Thoughts. The Marcel Dzama-directed video evokes the playful spirit of film-obsessed teenagers: staging a dramatic shoot-out scene in a garage, ogling the camera on skateboards and wearing cheap masks.
A month after Spoon release their ninth full-length, Hot Thoughts, they will kick off a short run of U.S. dates, which will start with an April 27th show in Mobile, Alabama and conclude in mid-May in Columbus, Ohio. They’re also set to return in August for a couple of concerts in Colorado.
The new tour dates complement a number of previously announced one-offs, festival dates and residencies. Spoon’s first U.S. date is set for March 6th at the Observatory in Santa Ana, California, then they’ll play a number of gigs at South by Southwest beginning on March 14th. Prior to the new Colorado dates, Spoon will play a number of festivals, including Louisville, Kentucky’s Forecastle (July 14th), Birmingham, Alabama’s Sloss Festival (July 15th) and New York’s Panorama (July 28th). They’re also set to play Columbia, Maryland’s Merriweather Post Pavilion (July 30th) and the Hollywood Bowl (August 6th).
The group announced last month that they would be putting out Hot Thoughts, their first new album since 2014’s They Want My Soul. They previously released dance-rock title song “Hot Thoughts,” and will premiere the album’s “Can I Sit Next to You” today on Apple Music’s Beats 1 radio, according to their Facebook.
The band also played a one-off gig in January in their hometown, Austin, where they debuted both of the previously mentioned songs, as well as Hot Thoughts‘ “WhisperI’lllistentohearit” and “Do I Have to Talk You Into It.” Frontman Britt Daniel told Sirius XM that playing a gig like that gave them some perspective on the tunes. “The way our albums usually happen, we’re writing the songs while we’re recording them,” he said. “And once the record’s done, you have to figure out how to play the songs … so doing a gig like this helps us.” The record is due out March 17th.
