Watch Bill Murray, Paul Shaffer’s Gleeful ‘Happy Street’ Animated Video
Paul Shaffer and Bill Murray take a joyous walk down “Happy Street” in the animated video for the lead single off the former Late Show bandleader’s new LP.
The Jay Marks-directed video features Murray and Shaffer strolling through a city with Murray as Pied Piper, as other city dwellers joined in on the song. The video hints at both Murray and Shaffer’s careers, with each frame packed with in-jokes. In a quick bar scene, for example, there’s a sign for Venkman & Sons’ Pharmacy (named after Murray’s Ghostbusters character), bottles of Tripper Pale Ale (named after Murray’s Meatballs counselor) and a TV set showing The Late Show.
Shaffer and Murray have a long history of collaborating together, dating back to Murray’s Nick the Lounge Singer on Saturday Night Live. Murray was a frequent guest of David Letterman’s Late Show when Shaffer was the band leader, and Shaffer served as musical director for the actor’s A Very Murray Christmas Netflix special.
“Happy Street” will feature on Paul Shaffer and the World’s Most Dangerous Band’s upcoming self-titled LP, due out March 17th, The album, Shaffer’s first since 1989’s Coast to Coast, also features contributions from Jenny Lewis, Darius Rucker, Dion, Shaggy and more.
