Hear the Mavericks’ New Latin-Influenced Party Jam ‘Damned (If You Do)’
The Mavericks head south of the border with “Damned (If You Do),” the latest taste of the band’s upcoming album, Brand New Day.
Filled with accordion, horns and plenty of Cuban percussion, the song splits the difference between the Mavericks’ Latin roots and their American headquarters, with Raul Malo’s booming baritone leading the charge. Arriving more than two months after the album’s first single – the lush, layered, Sixties-inspired title track – “Damned (If You Do)” returns the Mavericks to their familiar stomping grounds: an earthy but globetrotting place where Tex-Mex, Western swing and Miami music all intersect. (Listen to the track below.)
Released on March 31st, Brand New Day celebrates the band’s newfound independence. Malo and company split with their previous label, the Big Machine imprint Valory Music Co., last year. In doing so, they regained the freedom to record new music at their pace, scheduling a handful of sessions for Brand New Day in both Hollywood and Nashville. They brought co-producer Niko Bolas along for the ride, too. The result is a 10-song album that doubles down on the band’s genre-jumping sound.
