Rhiannon Giddens Plans 2017 Spring and Summer Tour
Building on what looks to be a very big year for Rhiannon Giddens, the roots performer has announced a lengthy run of spring and summer tour dates. Following the release of her highly-anticipated new album Freedom Highway, Giddens will embark on a series of headlining shows, festival dates and supporting slots that will carry her through mid-August.
The trek will essentially begin with an April 28th performance at the Stagecoach Festival in Indio, California, where Giddens is booked alongside mainstream stars like Dierks Bentley and traditional-leaning artists like Margo Price. Also included are three supporting dates in July on Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s Soul2Soul Tour, as well as appearances at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest and the Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island. Singer-songwriter Amythyst Kiah will support on a handful of dates. Her full itinerary appears below.
Giddens, who sings on Eric Church’s topical hit “Kill a Word” and plays a starring role on the current season of Nashville, will release her new album Freedom Highway on February 24th. The collection mixes Giddens’ originals like the New Orleans-influenced “Hey Bébé” with covers of the Staple Singers on the title track and Mississippi John Hurt’s “The Angels Laid Him Away,” taking time to examine longstanding racial divisions and find hope for better days ahead.
