Watch Future Islands’ Panoramic New Video for ‘Ran’
The moment Gerrit Welmers splays his hands across the keyboard in the new Future Islands video for “Ran,” singer Sam Herring impulsively bolts from the practice space and into the open air. The camera follows Herring bounding over Baltimore’s vibrant Howard Street bridge and through panoramic woods and wide fields outside the city.
The Albert Berney-directed video was shot out of the back of a small SUV, Herring tells Rolling Stone. “Me and William [Cashion] came up with the concept of the video and the day we shot it, I was like, ‘Oh shoot, now I have to go run’ – I haven’t run in like, eight years!” he laughs. “After that, I was hobbled over.” Herring says that he discovered the bucolic vistas while driving aimlessly around Baltimore, where all three members reside.
The practice space in the video is also bassist Cashion’s actual backyard shed-turned-space, with the large canvases on the walls behind the musicians drawn by his partner, artist Elena Johnston (Johnston also painted the cover of the band’s third album, On the Water.)
Future Islands‘ fifth album, The Far Field, comes out April 7th. The band will tour North America and Europe this summer in addition to main stage sets at Coachella, Panorama and Bonnaroo .
