Hear Bob Dylan’s Smoky Frank Sinatra Cover ‘My One and Only Love’
Bob Dylan has unveiled his new single “My One and Only Love,” another Sinatra-popularized classic from Dylan’s upcoming triple-LP of standards, Triplicate.
Like Triplicate‘s first single “I Could Have Told You,” the smoky, sentimental “My One and Only Love” appears on the collection’s first LP, dubbed ‘Til the Sun Goes Down.
“I am finding these great songs to be a tremendous source of inspiration that has led me to one of my most satisfying periods in the studio,” Dylan said of his new album, due out March 31st. “I’ve hit upon new ways to uncover and interpret these songs that are right in line with the best recordings of my own songs, and my band and I really seemed to hit our stride on every level with Triplicate.”
Frank Sinatra recorded “My One and Only Love” in 1953 as the B-side to his hit “I’ve Got the World on a String.” The Guy Wood/Robert Mellin-penned song became a jazz standard soon after, with John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Oscar Peterson among those who covered the track. Sting, Rod Stewart and Paul McCartney have also tackled “My One and Only Love.”
Each of the three volumes – ‘Til the Sun Goes Down, Devil Dolls and Comin’ Home Late – feature 10 thematically connected songs. While Sinatra, the focus of Dylan’s previous Shadows in the Night and Fallen Angels, is well represented on Triplicate, the 3-LP delves more deeply into the great American songbook, including classics like Herman Hupfeld’s “As Time Goes By” (made famous from Casablanca), Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust” and Irving Berlin’s “How Deep Is the Ocean?”
