Watch Animal Collective’s Lyric Video for Swirling ‘Kinda Bonkers’
Nearly a year after Animal Collective released their 2016 LP Painting With, the band return with The Painters, a new EP of four unreleased tracks laid down during that album’s recording sessions. On Monday, the psychedelic pop group unveiled the lyric video for the EP’s opening cut, the appropriately titled “Kinda Bonkers.”
Like the swirling Painting With material, “Kinda Bonkers” layers upon a canvas of hypnotic beats, dubbed-out bass and looping vocal samples, with Dave “Avey Tare” Portner rifling off lyrics like “Synchronicities / Obscurities / Complexities / It’s like I knew this would be happening.”
The track is paired with a trippy lyric video directed by Jack Kubizne that utilizes Brian DeGraw’s Painting With artwork; DeGraw also created The Painters‘ artwork.
The Painters – which also features “Peacemaker,” “Goalkeeper” and a studio rendition of “Jimmy Mack,” the Martha & the Vandellas track Animal Collective frequently played on the recent tour – is available to preorder now through the band’s site. The digital version of the EP drops on Friday, ahead of the 12″ vinyl’s arrival in May.
In addition to The Painters EP, Animal Collective will once again hit the road in May for a brief nine-date trek.
