Watch Fiona Apple’s Riotous Frankie Valli Cover for Valentine’s Day
Fiona Apple teamed with Lili Hayes, the Instagram-famous mother of director Kevin Hayes, for two special Valentine’s Day duets, Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” and Stevie Wonder’s “I Just Called To Say I Love You.”
For their energetic interpretation of Valli’s 1967 pop classic, Apple and Hayes looked deep into each other’s eyes as they crooned the tune and belted its famous horn part with as much chutzpah as its indelible hook, “I love you baby and it’s quite alright!”
While Apple and Hayes’ version of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” is available to watch in full, only a snippet of their rendition of “I Just Called to Say I Love You” was posted to Kevin Hayes’ Instagram. Still, the pair embrace the schmaltz of Wonder’s 1984 hit and unleash some hilariously overwrought vocal runs.
The two Valentine’s Day tunes arrive one week after the younger Hayes shared a video of Apple singing an a cappella cover of SWV’s 1992 single, “Weak.” While Apple has not released an album since 2012’s The Idler Wheel…, she’s been busy in recent months: Along with the low-key covers, she shared two anti-Trump tunes, a chant for the Women’s March and an a cappella reworking of a Christmas staple, “Trump’s Nuts Roasting on an Open Fire.”
