Watch Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Moving 2017 Oscar Performance
Lin-Manuel Miranda and Moana‘s 16-year-old star Auli’I Cravalho joined forces for an inspirational performance of the Oscar-nominated song “How Far I’ll Go.” Alessia Cara performed the pop single version of the track.
The performance began with Miranda rapping a new prologue to the song over an orchestral mix of acoustic guitar and strings. Miranda unleashed a crisp, layered verse: “She opens her eyes to find her mind is on her island but her eye’s on the horizon line.” Miranda turned the stage over to Cravalho, who belted the ballad as a group of dancers waving blue-tinted flags moved elegantly behind her.
This is Miranda’s first Oscar nomination and follows a stellar few years of being recognized for his work with the Broadway phenomenon Hamilton, which won him a Pulitzer Prize. Miranda has been moonlighting in film recently. He composed parts of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and all of Moana. Miranda will compose new music with Alan Menken for the live-action version of The Little Mermaid and will star in a remake of the film, Mary Poppins.
