Hear Mastodon’s Bruising New Single ‘Show Yourself’
Mastodon unveiled their blistering new “Show Yourself,” a three-minute bruiser off the heavy metal outfit’s upcoming LP Emperor of Sand.
“Show Yourself” comes full-speed right out of the gate, with drummer-singer-lyricist Brann Dailor handling lead vocals on the track. “You’re not as safe as far as I can tell, and I can tell,” Dailor sings on the song’s chorus. “Only you can save yourself/ Soon this will all be a distant memory/ Or could this dream be real at all?”
As Dailor told Rolling Stone, he was at first reticent about adding his vocals to “Show Yourself.” “When I first heard that riff, I wasn’t 100 percent on it,” Dailor said. “I felt like it was too easy to like or something – which is stupid, but I want to avoid ‘easy.’ I was wrong about that one.”
“Show Yourself” is one of the tracks that was borne out of a collection of riffs rhythm guitarist Bill Kelliher laid down while Mastodon was on tour. “The cup overfloweth with riffage,” Dailor added of their concept album Emperor of Sand, which arrives March 31st.
In addition to “Show Yourself” and first single “Sultan’s Curse,” Mastodon also mapped out their upcoming spring tour.
