Watch Chance the Rapper’s Glowing ‘Same Drugs’ Video
Chance the Rapper debuted the new video for “Same Drugs” on Monday via Facebook Live. In the clip, the rapper duets with a singing puppet behind a grand piano. He previously incorporated puppets when performing at his Magnificent Coloring Day festival in Chicago last summer.
“Same Drugs” begins as a melancholy reflection about getting older. “When did you change?” Chance sings. “Wendy, you’ve aged/ I thought you’d never grow up.” For the first half of the song, Chance’s puppet companion stays quiet, leaning against the rapper’s shoulder. But the puppet springs into action in time for the second verse. Later, a light rain starts to fall on Chance, who slowly gets up and walks off the set. As the camera follows him, it reveals that the whole film set is manned entirely by puppets.
“Same Drugs” appeared last year on Chance’s Coloring Book mixtape. The tape is nominated for Best Rap Album at the upcoming Grammys. That’s one of several nominations Chance received: he’s also competing in the categories for Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Performance.
