Hear Thundercat Team With Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald on New Song
Bassist-singer Thundercat enlists pop legends Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins for the deliriously smooth “Show You the Way,” the first song from his new album Drunk, out February 24th via Brainfeeder.
The track offers a melange of synths that glisten between crisp drums and a bubbling bass line, but with McDonald and Loggins on hand, “Show You the Way” is ultimately a vocal showcase. Thundercat holds his own with an airy opening hook and first verse before ceding the mic to Loggins, who delivers a punchy turn, and then McDonald, who tackles the track with his distinctly deep aplomb.
In an interview excerpt with Red Bull Music Academy Daily, Thundercat explained that “Show You the Way” is “about going down the rabbit hole, taking you to another place. On the edge of dark, there’s the brightest light. It means a lot to me in the sense of … inviting [people] into where I come from emotionally.”
Despite the heavy subject matter, “Show You the Way” brims with cheeky humor – like when Thundercat introduces his guests with applause. “The point is how weird things can get,” he tells Red Bull. “I feel like it’s very funny that, in a way, of course Michael McDonald and Kenny would be there.”
Drunk follows Thundercat’s 2015 mini-album, The Beyond/Where the Giants Roam, while his last full-length was 2013’s Apocalypse. The new 23-track album will also feature frequent collaborator Kendrick Lamar alongside Pharrell, Wiz Khalifa, Kamasi Washington and Flying Lotus. Along with “Show You the Way,” Drunk will feature the previously released “Bus in These Streets” and “Them Changes,” which appeared on The Beyond/Where the Giants Roam.
Thundercat will embark on an extensive world tour in support of Drunk February 13th at the Independent in San Francisco.
