Watch Big Sean Debut Soulful ‘Sunday Morning Jetpack’ on ‘SNL’
Big Sean made his Saturday Night Live debut by delivering a pair of tracks off his upcoming LP I Decided, the single “Bounce Back” and, in its premiere performance, new song “Sunday Morning Jetpack.”
The latter track featured Sean in reflective mode as the rapper thanking higher powers and late lovedones for his success. “You the reason I ever touched my first Franklin,” Big Sean says on the violin-backed track. “Fast forward, I’m in Kanye crib with Kirk Franklin.”
The rapper added on the chorus, “Thank you God for all my setbacks / ‘Cause he the reason I’m able to give back / This feels like my Sunday morning jetpack / Feel like I sent the prayers up and got blessed back.”
Big Sean previously told Beats 1 that the album version of “Sunday Morning Jetpack” features The-Dream, but that singer didn’t appear on the SNL rendition.
As Big Sean told Jimmy Fallon in a Tonight Show interview earlier in the week, he first visited SNL in 2010 as Kanye West’s guest after signing with the rapper.
“I’ve been to SNL, but this is my first time being the musical guest,” Big said. “I remember going up there with Kanye. I’m signed to Kanye so in 2010, he was performing there. Obviously, nobody knew who I was. This was before I put my [debut] album out. I remember looking around and equating Saturday Night Live with a certain level of success. Kanye, obviously, is not only a mentor, but also my favorite artist. You can just imagine what that feels like, to come back, and it’s like, I made it to SNL on my own.”
