Beach Boys’ ‘Pet Sounds’ Documentary Heading to Showtime
A documentary about the Beach Boys‘ 1966 masterpiece Pet Sounds is heading to Showtime, the channel announced Friday.
The Beach Boys: Making Pet Sounds will feature archival footage and studio outtakes as well as exclusive interviews with the album’s creators, Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston as well as David Marks, who left the Beach Boys prior to the album’s recording.
The documentary, which looks at “the story of the creation of the record that cemented The Beach Boys reputation as a leading force to rival The Beatles,” will premiere in April, Pitchfork reports.
The album celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2016 with a massive deluxe reissue, as well as a tour where Wilson played the LP in its entirety. The 40th anniversary edition of Pet Sounds included its own “making of” documentary.
This isn’t the first time Showtime has honed its spotlight on a Beach Boys classic: In 2004, the movie channel aired Beautiful Dreamer: Brian Wilson and the Story of Smile, which focused on the group’s then-unreleased Pet Sounds follow-up Smile. That film followed Wilson as he embarked on a tour where he performed the entire album as well as re-recorded the album for 2004’s Brian Wilson Presents Smile.
