Hear Thundercat’s Funky Unrequited Love Song, ‘Friend Zone’
Thundercat sings about being “just a friend” on his funked-out new track – released on Valentine’s Day – called “Friend Zone.”
Over a gooey blend of synths that slink and percolate alongside a thumping drum beat, Thundercat croons a classic tale of friendly affection becomes an unrequited crush. His lyrics are packed with telling references to video games like Diablo and Mortal Kombat. “I will throw you in the garbage/ ‘Cause you play too many games,” Thundercat sings. “I’m better off by myself/ Loving you’s bad for my health.”
“Friend Zone” was produced by Mono/Poly and follows “Show You the Way,” which features guest vocals from Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald. Both songs will appear on Thundercat’s upcoming record, Drunk, which arrives February 24th via Brainfeeder.
Drunk marks Thundercat’s first release since his 2015 mini-album, The Beyond/Where the Giants Roam, while his last full-length was 2013’s Apocalypse. The new album will feature appearances from Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell, Wiz Khalifa, Kamasi Washington and Flying Lotus.
Thundercat will embark on a world tour in support of Drunk February 13th at the Independent in San Francisco.
