Watch Young Thug Play Dice, Flaunt Cash in ‘Guwop’ Video
Young Thug hosts a backstage party in his minimalist “Guwop” video. Guest rappers Quavo, Offset and Young Scooter join in on the fun: rapping the triplet-filled Jeffery track, rolling dice, smoking, flipping off the camera and showing off their massive chains and stacks of cash.
Garfield Larmond’s fairly conventional clip contrasts with director Ryan Staake’s bizarre “Wyclef Jean” video released earlier this week. The visual, which earned over a million YouTube views within 24 hours, features children in police uniforms and kid-sized cars. It does not, however, feature Young Thug, who failed to show up for the shoot, forcing Staake to improvise the creative direction. Ultimately, the clip evolved into a rap video spoof, filled with captions that explain how the project “fell apart.”
Staake recently spoke to Rolling Stone about rescuing the nightmare shoot. “As bitter as my voice is in the writing [in the video] and as annoyed as I was on set, I do think in the end, [Young Thug’s] creative broad stroke of simply not showing up made this video,” he said. “Which is bizarre, but that’s kind of the way it rolled.”
Rolling Stone named Jeffery, Young Thug’s 2016 mixtape, the 10th best album of the year.
