Watch Stephen Colbert Call For ‘Million Meryl March’
After Meryl Streep rebuked Donald Trump during her Golden Globes speech on Sunday, the President-elect fired back on Twitter Monday morning, declaring Streep “one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood.” On Monday, Stephen Colbert said all it proves is the President-elect knows nothing about movies.
“Meryl Streep, overrated?” The Late Show-host sputtered. “Have you seen Sophie’s Choice? Have you seen The French Lieutenant’s Woman? Have you seen the one with the dead people – she’s even funny in that one!” An incredulous Colbert addressed himself directly to the President-elect: “Look Mr. Trump, you can refuse to release your taxes, you can call for a ban on an entire religion, you can play footsie with a dictator, but calling Meryl Streep overrated? No. Too far.”
Colbert also took aim at Kellyanne Conway, who defended Trump’s tweets. “This morning Trump spokeswoman and future award-winning-Meryl-Streep-role Kellyanne Conway weighed in on the reporter controversy by explaining that we shouldn’t get hung up on little things like what Donald Trump says and does,” Colbert said mockingly. He went on to call Trump “medically incapable of empathy.”
Streep fans who share Colbert’s passion for the actress’s extensive filmography will have a chance to show their distaste for Trump’s comments later this month by protesting during his inauguration in Washington, D.C. “I wasn’t going to go to that million woman march, but I’m going now,” Colbert said. “It’s going to a be million Meryl march. I’ll be the one holding the Blu-ray of Kramer vs. Kramer and weeping.”
Meryl Streep slammed Donald Trump and honored Carrie Fisher during her Cecil B. DeMille Award acceptance speech at the 2017 Golden Globes.
