Donald Trump on Madonna: ‘She’s Disgusting’
President Trump called Madonna “disgusting” during an interview with Fox News‘ Sean Hannity on Thursday, responding to Madonna‘s speech during the Washington D.C. Women’s March. The singer said she’s thought about “blowing up the White House.”
“I think she hurt herself very badly. I think she hurt that whole cause,” Trump said of the iconic pop singer, according to The New York Post. “I thought what she said was disgraceful to our country.”
Madonna made the dark comment during the massive D.C. march on Saturday. “I am outraged. Yes, I have an awful lot about blowing up the White House. But I know this won’t change anything,” she told the audience, which crowd scientists estimate at nearly a half-million people – roughly three times larger than Trump’s inauguration gathering. “We cannot fall into despair. As the poet W.H. Auden once wrote on the eve of World War II, ‘We must love one another or die.’ I choose love. Are you with me?”
Madonna drew heavy criticism for the remarks, including a jab from White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and insinuations of Secret Service investigations from Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway. Newt Gingrich condemned the singer as being part of “emerging left-wing fascism” and noted she “ought to be arrested.” Meanwhile, Texas radio station HITS 105 announced it will stop playing the singer’s music due to her “un-American sentiments.”
But in a since-deleted Instagram post on Sunday, Madonna clarified that her comments were “taken out of context,” noting, “I am not a violent person, I do not promote violence and it’s important people hear and understand my speech in its entirety.”
Trump, in his Hannity interview, also criticized former Saturday Night Live writer Katie Rich for her since-deleted Inauguration Day tweet about his son, Barron, whom she joked was America’s “first homeschool shooter.” (Rich later apologized and deleted her account and she was indefinitely suspended from the show.)
“A person from Saturday Night Live was terrible,” Trump said. “I don’t mind some humor, but it’s terrible. For them to attack, for NBC to attack my 10-year-old son … it’s a disgrace … It’s not an easy thing for him. Believe me.”
