Cale Tyson Plots Spring Tour, New Vinyl Release
Nashville’s Cale Tyson, a country traditionalist with a penchant for both the occasional yodel and swampy soul reference, has yet to release a full-length album stateside. Instead, two EPs – 2014’s Cheater’s Wine and 2013’s High on Lonesome – have documented his version of mournful Texas twang, where the steel guitar does the wailing and honky-tonk vamps keep it danceable instead of dreary. In March, Tyson will release a special-edition vinyl compilation of the two projects, Introducing Cale Tyson, remastered and running in a limited release of 300. (Watch the video for “Can’t Feel Love,” off Cheater’s Wine, below.)
Introducing Cale Tyson coincides with Tyson’s March tour, which will find him playing a series of dates from Kentucky to Texas. Tyson, signed to the U.K.’s Clubhouse Records, spent a good deal of 2016 on the road in Europe, packing rooms in London and finishing out the year with a few dates alongside Sam Outlaw. He’s planning on releasing his debut full-length LP, Careless Soul, worldwide in 2017, and Introducing Cale Tyson will, well, introduce his breed of unpretentious trad-country to listeners eager for more interpreters of the genre – like Margo Price and Sturgill Simpson – who traffic in storytelling, not tailgating.
“There’s a huge throwback revival going on,” he told Rolling Stone Country in 2014. “We’re obviously not playing what’s on the radio, it’s clear. If we wanted to play what’s on the radio, then we’d do that. But we’re inspired by other things and write a certain way, and if that becomes cool then that’s awesome. We’re not trying to copy what’s already been done, but we’re drawing influence from it and trying to make it creative in a modern way.”
