‘Better Call Saul’ Teases Gus Fring’s Return in Hilarious Fast-Food Ad
Gus Fring, demented purveyor of both high-end meth and fried chicken, is returning to television for the upcoming third season of Better Call Saul. The drug lord and Walter White nemesis smiles creepily in a teaser clip for the series, framed as a family-friendly TV ad for his fast-food chicken chain, Los Pollos Hermanos.
The video follows the tried-and-true blueprint of a standard restaurant promo, zooming between shots of smiling, satisfied employees and high-quality menu items. “At Los Pollos Hermanos, we know only the best will do for you and your family,” a narrator explains. “What does family taste like? In your heart, you know it’s the best ingredients, the spiciest spices, all prepared with love and care – and always delivered with a friendly smile. That’s the Los Pollos Hermanos promise.”
The spot ends with an upbeat greeting from Fring himself (Giancarlo Esposito), who, with the creepy gaze of a man equally versed in chicken seasoning and murder, hypes the company’s delicious new curly fries. “We are so sure you’ll like them,” he boasts. “And if you don’t, they’re on me!”
Esposito enthused about Fring’s long-awaited return via Twitter on Wednesday, announcing that the Breaking Bad spinoff/pseudo-prequel will soon explore “the rise of Gus.” “I’m back!! What you’ve been waiting for,” he wrote, linking to the clip. At the end of Season Two last year, an astute fan noticed that, if you scrambled the first letters of each episode, it spelled “FRINGSBACK.”
A rep for the show confirmed Fring’s return in a statement, noting, “Gus Fring will appear in season three of Better Call Saul.”
Better Call Saul hasn’t announced a premiere date for its third season. AMC recently promoted the 10-episode run with a teaser featuring Bob Odenkirk’s titular main character, Saul Goodman, getting arrested.
