See Margo Price’s Scorching ‘Austin City Limits’ Debut
It was March of last year that Margo Price showed up on the opening night of South By Southwest, just a few weeks after the release of her debut LP Midwest Farmer’s Daughter, and blasted the jaded festival crowd into the rock & roll-honky tonk stratosphere. It was a performance that birthed her appearance on Saturday Night Live, after leaving a permanent impression on one of the show’s bookers, who happened to be in attendance. This past October, Price returned to Texas for yet another milestone: to tape Austin City Limits, airing next week alongside a set from Hayes Carll. Catch an exclusive premiere of “Hurtin’ (On the Bottle)” from her episode above, where Price finishes the song by hopping into the audience and howling a goose bump-rousing last note.
“It’s really exciting, because I never thought I would even have a fan base,” Price tells Rolling Stone Country. “But now it’s cool, because I know people are looking forward to [new music]. I can’t wait to have new stuff to sing on stage. It’s better to keep moving and not look back and get stuck in the same spot.”
Price, who had Rolling Stone‘s top country song of 2016, is currently on tour in England, and was recently at work on her sophomore album at Sam Phillips Recording in Memphis and her hometown of Nashville with appearances from Josh Hedley, Erin Rae McKaskle, the McCrary Sisters and – though it’s unconfirmed as to whether or not he will actually make the LP – Mr. Third Man himself, Jack White.
“I’m always the most country person in the room,” she says. “One of the songs I wrote, though I don’t think it’s going to end up in the album, is called ‘Too Country for Country,’ all based off of what a radio programmer said to me once. But I also feel like it’s fine to bring in elements of soul and blues and rock and roll and funk and Mexicali.” Or, as Price introduces “Four Years of Chances” during her ACL performance, “country funk.” Watch it below.
Price’s episode of Austin City Limits, now is its 42nd season, airs the week of January 21st (check local listings).
