Hear Sunny Sweeney’s Fiery New Song ‘Better Bad Idea’
One thing Texas powerhouse Sunny Sweeney has never done is play it safe. She makes that clear with the first line of her explosive new track “Better Bad Idea,” from the upcoming LP Trophy, and the cheeky come-on, “Let’s wash our dirty minds in a bottle of white wine and do some things that we can’t take back.” She then ups the ante, making it clear she’s open to suggestions as the rockabilly-infused tune churns along. Listen to the premiere below.
Penned by Sweeney with Buddy Owens and Galen Griffin, “Better Bad Idea” captures the lighter, more humorous side of the singer-songwriter, which she previously explored with wild abandon on “Bad Girl Phase,” from her 2014 album Provoked. With Trophy, however, devastating heartbreak is just around the corner in “Bottle By My Bed,” one of four songs on the album she wrote with Lori McKenna (“Girl Crush,” “Humble and Kind”). A deep-from-the-heart expression of the frustration she has experienced at not having a child of her own, the tender ballad is yet another example of Sweeney defying expectations.
Produced by Dave Brainard, who helmed Brandy Clark’s breakthrough 12 Stories, Trophy also features guest vocalists Trisha Yearwood, Jack Ingram and Ray Benson. Sweeney recently announced the upcoming Trophy Tour, with shows set for New York City, Austin, Seattle, Kansas City, and more. On Friday, January 27th, Sweeney will play Goode’s Armadillo Palace in Houston, and on February 10th she’ll appear on the Grand Ole Opry.
Trophy will be available March 10th.
