Patti Smith, Iggy Pop Set for Terrence Malick Rock Drama ‘Song to Song’
Patti Smith, Iggy Pop and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are among a handful of musicians set to appear in Terrence Malick’s new movie set in the Austin music scene, IndieWire reports.
Song to Song will follow two couples who become entangled: A pair of struggling songwriters played by Rooney Mara and Ryan Gosling and a music mogul and a waitress played by Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman. Billed as a “modern love story,” the two couples will “chase success through a rock and roll landscape of seduction and betrayal.”
Florence and the Machine, the Black Lips and Lykke Li are among the other real-life musicians set to appear in Song to Song, which is set to open March 17th.
The film, previously known as Weightless, follows Malick’s 2016 film Knight of Cups, but has been in the works for several years. In 2011 and 2012, Malick reportedly shot a handful of scenes during sets at Austin City Limits and Fun Fun Fun Fest. Mara, for instance, joined the Black Lips on guitar at ACL, while a month later Val Kilmer crashed the band’s set at Fun Fun Fun.
A year prior, Christian Bale — who’s also reportedly attached to the film — played bongos with Fleet Foxes at ACL, while Malick also reportedly filmed Arcade Fire and Iron and Wine for the project. It’s unclear, however, if these artists will appear in the final cut of Song to Song.
