Watch Stephen Colbert Revive ‘Report’ Character For Obama Farewell
Stephen Colbert revived his conservative blowhard character from The Colbert Report on Thursday’s Late Show, sending off President Barack Obama with a poignant-by-accident farewell. Speaking “live” from his cabin in the “Mountains of Justice, where he lives with Jon Stewart,” the fake pundit admitted that he’s sad to bid Obama, a “worthy adversary,” farewell.
Using the format of classic Report desk piece “The Word (now “The Werd),” Colbert delivered an antagonistic monologue, illuminated by contrary sidebars. “You were a leader of vision, patience, dignity, passion and humanity, and it felt really good fighting for the opposite of all those things,” he said. “And with our next president, I think we won.” “And So Did Putin” appeared onscreen.
Colbert, whom the real host dubbed a “delusional egomaniac,” opened by mocking the major accomplishments that occurred under Obama’s watch, including the Affordable Care Act, taking out Osama Bin Laden, legalizing gay marriage and repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” He also celebrated that “our America-hating, secret Muslim, lead-from-behind, terrorist-fist-bumping, hopey-changey, Apologist-in-Chief is leaving office.”
But with the Obama era ending and Donald Trump ready to enter the White House, a fake-emotional Colbert begged the outgoing president to stay. “On behalf of everyone who opposed you, sir, I just wanna say: Please don’t go,” he said as “At Least Leave Biden!” remained on the screen.
