Watch ‘Star Wars’ Fans Hold Lightsaber Vigil for Carrie Fisher
Star Wars fans gathered in Anaheim, California Wednesday to honor Carrie Fisher with a lightsaber vigil, CBS Los Angeles reports.
“It was a random thing,” said organizer Jeff Rowan. “I decided that I think we should be paying homage to her and a lightsaber vigil was very fitting – even though technically she never really even carried a lightsaber – but I thought that it was a very fitting way for us to say goodbye to her.”
A couple hundred fans attended the vigil at Downtown Disney, and can be seen hoisting toy lightsabers in Fisher’s honor. The actress who portrayed Princess Leia in the Star Wars films died Tuesday following a massive heart attack on a flight last week.
Movie chain Alamo Drafthouse held their own lightsaber vigils at numerous locations around the country, alongside special screenings of some of Fisher’s most notable films.
Fisher’s death has elicited an outpouring of grief from every corner of the Star Wars community, from executives, fellow performers and fans alike. Series creator George Lucas said, “She was our great and powerful princess — feisty, wise and full of hope in a role that was more difficult than most people might think.” While Mark Hamill, who co-starred with Fisher as Luke Skywalker, wrote, “I am grateful for the laughter, the wisdom, the kindness and even the bratty, self-indulgent crap my beloved space-twin gave me through the years.”
