Watch Key & Peele Salute Obama With Final ‘Anger Translator’ Skit
Key & Peele‘s Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele reunited on Thursday’s The Daily Show to present one final sketch involving Key’s beloved character, Luther, Obama’s anger translator.
As Key explained to Trevor Noah in his introduction to the skit, a former Key & Peele writer penned the sketch as “catharsis” following Donald Trump’s victory. “So we decided to make a final Obama/Luther,” Key said of the character that once accompanied the actual president onstage at a White House Correspondents Dinner.
In the sketch, Peele’s “Obama” begins his farewell address to the nation alongside Luther, who promises to be on his best behavior. However, the mention of Donald Trump’s name quickly sends the anger translator into a rage.
“How did this happen? Y’all gonna vote for a man who makes America hate again,” Luther yelled. “Don’t you understand? This is how The Hunger Games starts.”
Obama said it is essential that “we move on as a country united,” which Luther countered by saying: “United in the fact that we can’t fucking stand each other!” When Obama promised the American people that if Trump succeeds, we all succeed, Luther remarked, “Unless he succeeds with all the shit he promised to succeed with. In that case, we’re fucked.”
“America, it’s been real, and it’s been good,” Peele’s “Obama” said to end his farewell address. “But it ain’t been real good.”
“Good luck with your health care, assholes. I’m out,” Luther said in closing before sneaking back into the frame and warning, “I got my eyes on you, pussy grabber.”
Although Key & Peele ended its five-season run in September 2015, Key promised Daily Show viewers that he and Peele are “cooking up new stuff together.”
