Katy Perry, Cher Join Nationwide Women’s Anti-Trump March
Katy Perry, Cher, Scarlett Johansson and Amy Schumer are among the singers and actresses that will participate in the nationwide Women’s March on Washington event, scheduled for the day after Donald Trump’s inauguration.
America Ferrera, who chairs the “Artist Table” for the January 21st march, also revealed that Chelsea Handler, Julianne Moore, Olivia Wilde, Debra Messing, Uzo Aduba and more celebrities will take part in the rallies, which stretch from Washington D.C. to Los Angeles to the Sundance Film Festival (the latter finding Handler leading a march).
“Since the election, so many fear that their voices will go unheard,” Ferrera, who spoke at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, said in a statement (via Variety).
“As artists, women, and most importantly dedicated Americans, it is critical that we stand together in solidarity for the protection, dignity and rights of our communities. Immigrant rights, worker rights, reproductive rights, LGBTQIA rights, racial justice and environmental rights are not special interests, they affect us all and should be every American’s concern.”
GLAAD, Planned Parenthood and Amnesty International are among the organizations helping to orchestrate the march, with Gloria Steinem and Harry Belafonte serving as honorary co-chairs.
Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend the Women’s March on Washington in the nation’s capital on January 21st, with thousands more taking part in sister marches nationwide that Saturday. It’s unclear which cities Perry, Cher, Johansson and others would attend.
“In the spirit of democracy and honoring the champions of human rights, dignity and justice who have come before us, we join in diversity to show our presence in numbers too great to ignore,” the group said in their mission statement. “The Women’s March on Washington will send a bold message to our new government on their first day in office, and to the world, that women’s rights are human rights. We stand together, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us.”
