Sturgill Simpson to Perform on ‘Saturday Night Live’
Sturgill Simpson will be Saturday Night Live‘s first musical guest of 2017. The Grammy-nominated country singer will perform on the January 14th episode of the sketch-comedy series, hosted by actress Felicity Jones – Jyn Erso of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Simpson is just the latest country artist to appear on SNL. In the past two seasons alone, the show has invited Chris Stapleton, Margo Price and Blake Shelton to take the stage, with Shelton doing double duty as host. Most recently, Maren Morris performed “My Church” and “’80s Mercedes” on the December 10th show.
Both Morris and Simpson are up for all-genre awards at the 59th Grammy Awards on February 12th, with Simpson nominated for Album of the Year and Country Album of the year for A Sailor’s Guide to Earth. Simpson recently wrapped up a tour in support of the record, and hinted at taking some time off in a recent New York Times interview. His Grammy nominations, however, will likely change that. “I was so certain that when the tour wrapped up, we were done,” he told the Times. “But it might be a good idea to go play some shows again, I don’t know, given how many millions of people are saying, ‘Who the [expletive] is Sturgill Simpson?’ as of this morning.”
