On the Charts: The Weeknd’s ‘Starboy’ Reclaims Number One
The Weeknd‘s expansive 2016 album Starboy returned to Number One on the Billboard 200 for the first time in six weeks, while film soundtracks dominated the latest Top 10.
Starboy sold 69,000 total copies (mostly through audio streaming) that edged it from Number Two last week to the top spot, Billboard reports. The Weeknd‘s numbers were also buffeted by the end of the holiday season, causing seasonal juggernauts like Pentatonix’s A Pentatonix Christmas to drop significantly from Number One to Number 41 on the Billboard 200.
Between the holidays and school break, soundtracks also surged on the charts this week. Disney’s family-friendly Moana jumped from Number Six to Number Two with 64,000 total copies. Sing (Number Eight), Suicide Squad (Number Nine) and Trolls (Number 10) also populated the Top 10.
As Billboard notes, it’s been 18 years since four soundtracks simultaneously occupied the Top 10. The last time this occurred, in 1998, the four soundtracks were: Armageddon, Dr. Dolittle, How Stella Got Her Groove Back and City of Angels.
The rest of the Top 10 featured albums that spent much of 2016 in the same vicinity: Drake’s Views jumped up to Number Four, the Hamilton Broadway cast recording landed at Number Six and Twenty One Pilots’ Blurryface remained at Number Seven. Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic at Number Three and J Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only at Number Five rounded out the Top 10.
