Ciara Drops Defamation Suit Against Future
Ciara dropped her $15 million defamation suit against her ex-fiancé Future Friday, a year after the singer first accused the rapper of slander.
Ciara‘s defamation suit was dismissed with prejudice, meaning the singer couldn’t re-file the lawsuit against Future in the future, TMZ reports.
Reps for Future and Ciara did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
In the initial January 2016 lawsuit, Ciara accused Future of questioning her parenting and falsely complaining about his lack of access to their two-year-old son in a series of radio interviews and tweets. (“I gotta go through lawyers to see babyfuture . . . the fuckery for 15k a month,” the rapper once tweeted.)
Ciara also accused Future of making murderous threats toward her new boyfriend, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.
Future then filed a countersuit against his ex which claimed that his comments couldn’t damage Ciara’s reputation because her career was already at a low point following her 2015 LP Jackie, an album the rapper’s legal team called a “flop.”
While lawyers for Future and Ciara were battling it out in court, Ciara and Wilson were married in July 2016; in October, the singer announced she and Wilson were expecting their first child together.
That same month, Ciara began the process of ending her lawsuit against her ex, dismissing the original defamation lawsuit but continuing with similar “false light” lawsuit that didn’t need to provide evidence of proof of harm. It was the latter suit that Ciara ended by filing legal documents at Fulton County, Georgia’s Superior Court Friday.
In a July 2016 Rolling Stone cover story, Future opened up about the lawsuit and said he wished Ciara success with her career, despite rumors that he wanted to see the singer fail.
“I would never wish that,” he says. “Her being successful, her being happy, helps me. I’m attached to you. If you’re happy, I’m happy. You’re connected for life. I don’t want you to go through this shit and for it to come back on my son, my kid. I want you to be in the best situation.”
