Watch Sleater-Kinney Tear Through ‘Surface Envy’ Off New Live LP
Sleater-Kinney unleash a blistering live rendition of “Surface Envy” set to appear on their upcoming album, Live in Paris, out January 27th via Sub Pop.
The punk trio recorded the track during their March 20th, 2015 show at La Cigale in Paris. A new video combines footage from that gig with fan-shot clips from throughout Sleater-Kinney‘s career.
Along with “Surface Envy,” Live in Paris features several tracks from the group’s 2015 comeback LP, No Cities to Love. The 13-track album also includes favorites from Dig Me Out, The Hot Rock, One Beat and The Woods, stretching as far back as “I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone” from 1996’s Call the Doctor. Live in Paris marks Sleater-Kinney’s first live album and is available to pre-order on CD, vinyl and cassette.
After spending much of 2015 on the road in support of No Cities to Love – their first album in a decade – Sleater-Kinney played a handful of concerts last year, including a New Year’s Eve show in San Francisco. The group’s members also dispersed to other projects, with Corin Tucker co-founding the supergroup Filthy Friends with members of R.E.M., the Minus 5 and King Crimson and Carrie Brownstein taping Season Seven of Portlandia, which premieres January 5th on IFC.
Still, in a 2015 interview with Rolling Stone, Brownstein suggested that No Cities was not a reunion one-off for Sleater-Kinney. “I think we’ll definitely get back to writing songs,” she said. “We feel less trapped by a repetitive cycle of writing, recording and touring. But the band feels like it’s up and running again.”
