Hear Anohni, CocoRosie’s Lucid Anti-Trump Song ‘Smoke ‘Em Out’
CocoRosie enlist Anohni for a lithe and searing new anti-Trump protest song, “Smoke ‘Em Out,” for the Women’s March on Washington set to take place January 21st, the day after the inauguration.
The track opens with scattershot percussion and a plucky string melody that soon shifts to an ominous drone. CocoRosie sisters Bianca and Sierra Casady unravel a string of abstract, yet vivid, lyrics to welcome Donald Trump to the White House: “Got children and wives waving forks and knives/ The new sound circles round/ Slaughter raging death dice.” Meanwhile, Anohni peppers the song with operatic vocal runs and delivers the song’s stark and infectious refrain.
To accompany “Smoke ‘Em Out,” CocoRosie also shared a poem, which they said, “digs deeper into the subtext of the lyrics exploring the unending end of time ambiance and the idea that ‘the future is female’ and a very necessary force to be reckoned with.”
CocoRosie announced they were at work on a new album as well, marking the follow-up to 2015’s Heartache City. Meanwhile, “Smoke ‘Em Out” marks Anohni’s first release since her politically charged 2016 LP, Hopelessness.
