Watch Alec Baldwin Imitate Donald Trump During NYC Protest
Robert De Niro, Alec Baldwin, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Moore, Reverend Al Sharpton and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio united Thursday in New York City for a demonstration protesting president-elect Donald Trump. Thousands assembled outside the Trump International Hotel, a half-mile from Trump Tower, the night before the Republican’s inauguration.
De Niro, the event’s first celebrity speaker, called Trump “a bad example of this country and this city,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Baldwin, who unleashed some of his now-famous Trump impressions showcased on SNL, slammed the incoming president and his cabinet selections. “These people are a disgrace, but there is hope,” he told the crowd, which reportedly stretched across five blocks. “Trump and Pence think you’re going to lay down. That’s one thing about New Yorkers: You don’t lay down.”
Sharpton argued against Trump’s infamous campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again,” telling the crowd, “America is already great and we will make it even greater!” But Moore, the acclaimed filmmaker and outspoken Trump critic who predicted his presidential upset victory, warned the crowd with a grave message: “We’re at a very dangerous moment in history … As bad as you think it’s going to be, it’s going to be worse.”
Ruffalo shifted the tone toward hope, saying he “needed” the protest. “We’re coming here tonight to protect something precious to us, and that’s each other,” he said, according to THR.
Sally Field, Cher, Julianne Moore, Marisa Tomei, Chirlane McCray, Rosie Perez and Natalie Merchant also appeared at the rally, which was organized by Greenpeace and liberal activist group MoveOn.
In a statement announcing the protest, Ruffalo stated: “We are sending a message to Washington that we will fight, at every step, discrimination and harmful policies, today, tomorrow and every day. [We] are coming together to stand up for one another, as we will do every day, to protect the values we hold dear.”
MoveOn is live-streaming the event via Facebook.
