On the Charts: Pentatonix’s ‘Christmas’ Rings in Number One
Pentatonix‘s A Pentatonix Christmas climbed to Number One on the Billboard 200, with the vocal group’s seasonal LP moving 206,000 total copies in the final week before Christmas.
A Pentatonix Christmas is the first yuletide album to finish atop the charts since Michael Buble’s Christmas reached Number One in 2011, Billboard reports.
A Pentatonix Christmas‘ slow ascent to Number One began nine weeks ago with a Number Three debut; after hovering in the Top Five for past two months, the album surged to Number One thanks to countless promotional appearances, an iTunes sales and the holiday season.
Adding to Pentatonix’s Christmas glee, the group’s 2014 holiday LP That’s Christmas to Me also reached the Top Five – at Number Five – thanks to 78,000 in sales.
Despite the last-minute holiday shopping, no new releases cracked the Top 10 this week. Last week’s Number One, J. Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only, slipped to Number Four behind Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic (Number Two) and the Weeknd’s Starboy (Three).
The only new entrant into the Top 10 was Garth Brooks’ boxed set The Ultimate Collection, which rose from Number 13 to Number Six in its second week of release.
Behind Brooks, the Hamilton Broadway cast recording remained at Number Seven, with Metallica’s Hardwired… to Self-Destruct, the Rolling Stones’ Blue & Lonesome and the Moana soundtrack populating Numbers Eight through 10, respectively.
Next week, some unexpected new releases – including Nine Inch Nails’ Not the Actual Events and Run the Jewels’ Run the Jewels 3 – will battle it out with renewed interest in the George Michael catalog following the pop singer’s December 25th death; Faith currently sits at Number Three on the iTunes Album Chart.
