Hear DOOM, Madlib Reunite on Head-Spinning ‘Avalanche’
Madvillain collaborators DOOM and Madlib unveiled a hazy and head-spinning new track, “Avalanche,” available now on seven-inch vinyl via Madlib Invazion.
As Pitchfork points out, a snippet of “Avalanche” has been circulating on the web for years without proper release. The song opens with DOOM giving what seems to be a casual spoken intro, but quickly reveals itself to be the first lines in his stream-of-consciousness flow: “I’d like to start off by thanking our sponsor/ For financing the parts for this Frankenstein monster/ Along with my partner who’s a bro of few words/ Who did this research with true nerds and two birds.”
Over Madlib’s understated production – crackling vocal loops, dusty bass and simple percussion – DOOM keeps up a casually brilliant performance packed with references and surreal turns of phrases like, “I can’t believe my eyeballs no more than ‘Steveland’/ No ‘Wonder.'”
Notably, “Avalanche” is credited to Madlib and DOOM individually, rather than their collaborative monicker, Madvillain. The pair have only released one album together, 2004’s Madvillainy.
The “Avalanche” seven-inch is also being sold with a new eight-inch Madvillain action figure designed by the same team that made Kid Robot’s Madvillain action figure. The set is available to order via Rappcats, with 500 shipping now and the rest available in February.
