Samantha Bee to Democrats: ‘I Know You’re Having a Rough Time’
Samantha Bee took aim at the Democratic party infighting on Monday, rebuking those members of the left who have been attributing the Democrats’ stinging election loss to a focus on identity politics rather than economic issues.
Bee gave short shrift to this argument. “If your panic over a loss makes you abandon both your principles and the people who actually vote for you, then you’ll be in the wilderness for a decade,” she said. “Or until Trump’s cabinet sells the wilderness to oil companies – so really, about a month.”
The Full Frontal host showed a series of clips from various TV personalities alongside a New York Times article titled “The End of Identity Liberalism” suggesting that Democrats spent too much time on topics of identity and not enough time discussing the creation of new jobs. She contrasted this punditry with a lengthy montage of Hillary Clinton talking about her economic plans on the campaign trail and a Washington Post poll that showed that voters in battleground states actually preferred Clinton’s economic vision over Donald Trump’s.
In addition, Bee pointed to the recent victory of Roy Cooper in the North Carolina gubernatorial race over a Republican incumbent, Pat McCrory, who supported what came to be known as the “bathroom bill” – legislation that discriminated against transgender people. “You know what happens when Democrats stand up for transgender rights?” Bee asked. “They win.”
