Lady Gaga Reveals Mental Trauma: ‘I Suffer From PTSD’
Lady Gaga revealed during a poignant Today Show interview that she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, which began after she was raped at age 19. “Today I shared one of my deepest secrets w/ the world,” the singer tweeted Monday, linking the interview video. “Secrets keep you sick w/ shame.”
Gaga visited New York City’s Ali Forney Center, a homeless shelter for LGBTQ youth, and spoke to teenagers who battle with mental trauma for Today‘s #ShareKindness segment. “I told the kids today that I suffer from a mental illness – I suffer from PTSD,” she shared after. “I’ve never told anyone that before, so here we are.”
Seated around the teens, Gaga discussed using meditation to “calm down” and stay relaxed. “The kindness that’s been shown to me, by doctors as well as my family and my friends, it’s really saved my life,” she reflected. “I’ve been searching for ways to heal myself, and I’ve found that kindness is the best way.”
The segment ends with Gaga performing a solo acoustic guitar version of “Million Reasons,” a single from her recently released fifth LP, Joanne.
